Learning from Mark Rothko

The meeting of 5 presenters from Greece and Italy, during November 2022, at the International Conference Τerra Incognita Athens (organized by  Hellenic American College https://terra.hauniv.edu), sparked a common interest:  the MARK ROTHKO PROJECT, which through interdisciplinary approaches explores the path of the leading Abstract Expressionist through Ancient Greece, Rome and Byzantium, as well as the extension to modern art up to the present day.

An important first stop on this research journey is the group exhibition, with the support of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture: "The Art of Immersion in Modern Greek Art: Learning from Mark Rothko."  The audience will be presented with the expressive possibilities of contemporary Greek abstract painting, which draws its inspiration from the Abstract Expressionist Mark Rothko (whose 120th birthday is celebrated this year) and his ability to create the feeling of the viewer's absorption within the color field of the work (εμβύθιση - immersion).

The exhibit includes works by 24 contemporary Greek and foreign artists, parallel events, as well as the sole book illustration that Rothko had undertaken, almost a century ago.
